Unremitted N12 bn: Reps summon AGF, CBN governor
The House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee on assessment and status of all recovered loots, and immovable assets from 2002 to 2020 on Monday ordered the appearance of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) over unaccounted recovery funds to the tune of about 12 billion naira.
In the same vein, the Committee summoned the heads of other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) EFCC, Ministry of Finance, Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps (NSCD) for shunning Committee invitation.
The Committee which is being chaired by Mr. Adejoro Adeogun (Ondo, APC) expressed displeasure over the lackadaisical attitude displayed by Heads of agencies of federal government whenever they are called upon to give explaination to certain issues.
In his remarks, the chairman further noted that “when it is time for them to come and defend their budget they come personally, but when it is time to defend what they have been given, account for what they have spent then they feel too big”.
In a letter sighted by our correspondent, signed by the director of funds, Mr. Sabo Mohammed, shows that N15. 5 million was paid into the Assets Recovery Account between 14 and 15 January 2020. While a further check in the account details as presented by the Accountant General of the Federation account to the Committee did not reflect the payment.
Another document signed by the Sabo Mohammed of Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) office showed that N15. 47 million was paid into the AGF account whereas no trace of such funds in the account.
Our reporter also gathered that there are other transactions amounting to N12 billion unaccounted funds by office of the Accountant General of the Federation and the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Also, Mr. Wole Oke (PDP, Osun) moved a motion demanding that the Chief Accountant of Federation should appear in person due to issues raised.
On that note, the Committee chairman, Adeogun ordered the Accountant General and the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to appear on Tuesday, 10am in person as the issues raised are germaine. In same vein, the EFCC boss was also ordered to appear before the Committee unfailingly on Wednesday”
