Following the spate of attacks in the Southeast States that has caused governors sleepless nights, Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has ordered Local Government Chairmen and Councillors back to their localities.
CAPITAL POST found out that most Chairmen, their deputies and Councillors are apprehensive of spate of attacks, hence, they are unsure of the next target, particularly from IPOB members.
The situation has forced some of the Chairmen and political office holders to relocate to Enugu, the State Capital, a situation that didn’t go down well with the governor.
But in a new directive by the State governor who is serving his second tenure of office, he directed all chairmen of the 17 Local Government Areas of the State, their deputies and the 260 elected councilors “to immediately and permanently relocate to their respective local government areas and wards.”
He urged the political office holders to safeguard lives and property of the citizens.
Commissioner for Information, Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh who signed the statement on Friday and made it available to journalists, maintained the development followed the governor’s consultation with relevant stakeholders in the State on security.
According to him, the had a meeting with the Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Edward Ubosi, members of the House; members of the State Executive Council; Chairmen and Vice-Chairmen of all the 17 local government areas, where the decision was reached.
Aroh added: “The Local Government Council Chairmen and Councilors were also directed to, as a matter of urgency, convoke a stakeholders’ meeting on security in their local government areas and wards, respectively.
He revealed that the governor, at the meeting, “announced his decision to start visits to communities and areas identified as flashpoints.
“It was further resolved that while the ongoing consultation continues with the following groups; National Assembly members from Enugu State; Traditional Rulers and Presidents-General of Town Unions; Religious Leaders and the Clergy; Women, Youth and Student Leaders; National Union of Road Transport Workers and other allied groups in the transport sector; The press and other interest groups, all hands must be on deck to ensure that the priceless peace and security being enjoyed in Enugu State are sustained”, the statement said.
