Gunmen attacks Imo Police Command, breaks into Owerri prison, frees 1500 inmates
Dare devil gunmen in Owerri on Monday morning broke into the Owerri Correctional Prison in the Imo State capital and freed over 1500 inmates.
They further moved to
Imo State Police Command headquarters situated in Owerri and set ablaze almost all the vehicles parked at the command headquarters and set free all criminals who were held at the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command.
Sources said the gunmen operated from 1am till 3am on Monday without any challenge by security operatives.
The source also disclosed that the gunmen sang solidarity songs at the Government House Roundabout for about 30 minutes with sporadic shooting into the air attacking the facilities.
The attackers broke into the prison facility with the aid of explosives and dynamite, and told the inmates to go home.
Police Public Relations Officer of Imo State Police Command Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the attacks to newsmen.
He, however, assured the people of the state that the security agencies were on top of the matter.
It couldn’t be confirmed if members of Eastern Security Network (ESN), a militia arm of the proscribed Indegenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) were behind the attack as neither their leader Nnamdi Kanu nor their spokesman, Emma Powerful has issued a statement claiming responsibility as at the time of this report.
