Service Chiefs and the Ministry of Defence on Monday didn’t honour the invitation of the House Ad-Hoc Committee on the Need to Review the Purchase, Use and Control of Arms, Ammunition and Related Hardware by Military, Paramilitary and Other Law Enforcement Agencies in Nigeria.

The Lower chamber frowned at the non appearance of the affected agencies as the Committee could not deliberate on issues at stake.

Change of Name

The Ad-Hoc Committee was meant to discuss the revelation by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Babagana Monguno, that security fund was missing under the immediate past Service Chiefs.

Apart from the Service Chiefs and the Ministry of Defence, the Committee also summoned the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu; and the Central Bank governor, Godwin Emefiele.

The terms of reference of the Ad-hoc Committee was to explain the procurement and deployment of arms and ammunition in their respective agencies.

Last week, the National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd), had alleged that $1bn funds meant to purchase arms to tackle insurgency during the ex-service chiefs’ tenure got missing, a statement that generated controversy.

Monguno, had in an interview with the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation early that Friday, alleged that neither the funds nor the weapons the ex-service chiefs were meant to buy could be traced.
