Ortom: 24 hours after Benue governor escapes assasination attempt, Gov. Lalong yet to react
Twenty hours after Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State escaped assasination attempt on him by Fulani herdsmen militia, his Plateau State counterpart, Simon Lalong was yet to react through a statement.
Simon Lalong is the Chairman of Northern Governors Forum, which Samuel Ortom is a member.
Findings by CAPITAL POST on Sunday, which is 24 hours after Ortom was waylaid on his river bank farm at Tyo-mu along Gboko-Makurdi Road by the herders militia arm, rrvealed that no official statement has been issued in his capacity as Chairman of Northern Governors Forum.
Though, Plateau State governor is of the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC), Samuel Ortom is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
But the governor of Rivers State, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, while condemning the attack warned of the dire consequences of getting Ortom killed.
Reacting through a statement which was signed by his media aide and made available to newsmen on Saturday, Wike said, the killing of Samuel Ortom would mean an invitation to another civil war, which Nigeria may not survive.
On Saturday, CAPITAL POST reported that Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom escaped being killed by the gun-wielding Fulani herdsmen, save for his security details that engaged the assailants.
The herders opened fire on the governor’s entourage at Tyo Mu along Makurdi-Gboko Road.

Speaking with newsmen on the attack, at the Government, Governor Ortom said about 15 assailants trailed him to the river bank where he was on foot to inspect a farm.
The governor praised his six security details for responding quickly to the attack, repelling the assailants and providing cover for him to return to safety in his vehicles.
He said troops of Operation Whirl Stroke, the police and DSS have mobilised to the forest between Tyo-Mu and Abinse where the armed herdsmen camped to comb the area.

He also called for the arrest and prosecution of the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore.

The group at a meeting in Yola reportedly called for Ortom’s assassination.

Ortom asked President Muhammadu Buhari and the security chiefs to expect a formal petition from his lawyers and move quickly to arrest the situation.
