Society is unsustainable without women – Nasarawa Women Commissioner

The Nasarawa State Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Halima Ahmadu Jabiru described International Women Day celebration as unique and important to all women worldwide.

“As you know women have contributed a lot in growth and development of every society.

Hajiya Halima Jabiru explained further that production survival and continuity of the human race cannot be sustained without women.

She made this proclamation shortly after a symposium programme set aside to mark international women’s day celebration in Lafia.

While traced history, the Women Commissioner stated that women have increasingly exhibited a remarkable capacity and resilience in social, economic and indeed political transformation and wellbeing of their societies and families.

“But unfortunately, women are largely discriminated against and suffer all kinds of inhuman and degrading conditions on account of cultural, religious, social and political stereotypes and beliefs.

Hajiya Halima Jabiru pointed out that the imperative of providing minimum internally acceptable standards for treatment of women, has led to deliberations, agreements and the enactment of various status and obligations, prescribing and requesting individual, governmental and community.

“Relationship, and actions relating to women. Notable among these are international year of women in 1975 which formally institutionalized the celebration of the International Women’s Day at the world conference on women and Beijing platforms for Action in 1995.

“This draw attention to women issues and challenges confronting them across all sector. She stated.

She told our correspondent that the theme of this year’s celebration, theme is apt, considering the hardship and stress that the entire humanity has been subjected into.

According to her COVID-19 pandemic has no regard for gender since it affected both male and female, it is also a fact that Women especially have been placed at special risk having consider actions relating to lockdowns and restrictions which made them particularly vulnerable to violence and other sexually related abuses.

“It is therefore necessary to provide avenues for resolving the peculiar challenges they are facing with a view to protect their lives as well as guarantee their wellbeing in the society.

Hajiya Halima Jabiru used the medium to shower commendation on the, Speaker of Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Abdullahi Balarabe and his colleagues for working day in day out for passing into law the State VAPP, law 2020.

“This law that I’m talking about, Governor Abdullahi Sule has graciously assented to it with which the women are now confident that the State will no longer be a safe haven for the perpetrators of gender based violence and related offences against women and girls.” She said.

The Commissioner acknowledged women in corridors of power include, Justice Aisha Bashir Aliyu, Acting Chief Judge as the first Woman to attain the position in the state and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala as first woman and African to be elected as Director General of the World Trade Organization ( WTO), saying they are tremendously doing well.

She also appreciated, Governor Abdullahi Sule for putting smiles on the faces of women through empowering them in various skills acquisition, training and take off grants for small scale businesses, adding that widows and other widows.

“You should also note that the governor assisted vulnerable and widows with food items, clothes and cash to cope with situation of COVID19 pandemic.”
