Niger: Five bandits killed, others arrested in gun battle with vigilante group
Five armed bandits have been gunned down by men of the vigilante group in Gulu Azza axis of Lapai local government area of Niger State.
The vigilante group equally arrested seven of the armed bandits during their operation jointly carried out with other neighbouring vigilante group from Fappo village.
The armed bandits according to CAPITAL POST findings were said to have invaded some residents in the community to carry out their attacks on the locals, when the vigilante group laid ambushed on them and engaged them in gun battles which led to the killing of five.
It was gathered that the armed bandits have been launching unsucessful attacks on the communities within the Azza axis of Southern part of Lapai in the last three months, while men of the vigilante group in the area were equally mapping out their own strategies to confront the bandits.
Their strategy yielded the result of the successful attack on the armed bandits.
The killing of the armed bandits, CAPITAL POST reliably gathered has brought relief to the communities around Azza axis as the activities of the armed bandits was on the increase in the last three months.
The activities of the armed bandits in some part of Niger State has been on the increase in the past three years.
The bandits have placed seven local government area in the Northern and Eastern part of the state under siege displacing locals who were mostly peasant farmers out of their communties.
Among the local government areas that suffered monumental casualities in the attack of armed bandits include Rafi, Shiroro, Mnya, Paikoro, Mariga, Mashegu and Kontagora local government areas all in the Northern and Eastern part of the state.
Several moves by the armed bandits to launch their attack on some part of the Southern part of the state have met with resistance from the joint vigilante group and some group of local hunters who usual engaged the bandits in gun battle leading to death and arrest of some the bandits.
