As reactions continue to trail Father Mathew Hassan Kukah’s Christmas homily where he criticised President Muhammadu Buhari and accused him of nepotism, JNI, an Islamic group on Tuesday sought for his apology and issued Clergy quit notice from Sokoto, the seat of the Caliphate.
But in his reaction on pressures being mounted on the Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, the former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has insisted that Kukah committed no offence against muslims, hence, he won’t apologise.
The bone of contention in Kukah’s message, CAPITAL POST gathered, was, “….there could have been a coup, if a non-northern Muslim President did a fraction of what Buhari had done.”
In series of reactions by individuals and groups, the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum demanded Kukah’s prosecution for allegedly demanding a coup.
Similarly, Jama’atu Nasril Islam declared Kukah’s Christmas message a “calculated attempt to insult” Islam and Muslims in the country.
Another Sokoto based Islamic group under.the aegis of Muslim Solidarity Forum asked Kukah to apologise for his alleged attack on “Islam or quietly leave the Caliphate.”
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday in Sokoto, Acting Chairman of the Forum, Prof. Isah Muhammad Maishanu alledged that Kukah has been consistent in making inflammatory statements against Muslims, despite their magnanimity in allowing him to be in Sokoto which is considered a heartbeat of Islam.
Meanwhile, in his verified Twitter handle, Femi Fani-Kayode said the Bishop did not say anything wrong and would not apologise.
Fani-Kayode cautioned individuals and groups seeking the Clergy’s apology to be mindful of their actions and give peace a chance.
He tweeted, “Bishop Hassan Kukah did not attack Islam & has nothing to apologise about.
“He has always sought for religious tolerance & peaceful co-existence between Christians & Muslims. Those that demand that he “must apologise” or “leave Sokoto” must mind their utterances & keep the peace.
