Niger State embraces community policing, trains 4,000 youths
The establishment of Community Policing in Niger State will assist in complementing the police to surmount the increasing proportions of security challenges confronting Niger State Police Command, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Niger State Barr. Abdulmalik Sarkindaji has said.
The Commissioner who was speaking with Journalists in an interview said the state government was passionate about the establishment of community policing which informed the decision of Governor Abubakar Sani Bello to give the speedy approval for the training of the recruited 4,000 youths across the 25 Local Government areas of the State.
He explained that Niger State was the first state in the country that embraced the community policing of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, towards enhancing effective policing, stressing that the importance of community police as a result of the current security challenges in the country cannot be over emphasized.
He stated that inspire the current security challenges confronting the the state, the governor was committed to support the security agencies in the state with the needed logistics to enable them surmount the challenges.
According to the Commissioner, governor Abubakar Sani Bello has so far supported the security agencies in the state with logistics and other working tools to enable them perform their duties as a result of the increasing promotion of armed banditry and other security challenges in the State, adding, that more of such support will be extended towards enhancing security of lives and property of the citizens.
Speaking on the shortages of man power in the State Police command, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji disclosed that the State government was not unaware of the trend, assuring that more recruitment of youths in the state would soon be engaged in the community police to further complement the existing numbers of police in the state
He noted that the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Adamu Usman has been up and doing in effectively policing the State”, even with the lean resources at his disposal, he was able to ensure that his men still work round the nooks and crannies of the State to protect the lives and property of the people of the state” .
“You all know that Niger State, has the largest land mass in the country. And you know that policing the state would not be seen as an easy task. So for the Commissioner of Police and his men to Police a State like Niger State you know what it means”, he stated.
While commending the Niger State Police Command for its commitment in ensuring the protection of lives and property of the people of the state, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji assured the Commissioner of Police of the State government’s commitment to give the command the needed support to enhance their performance in securing the state at all times.
