In line with the global digitalisation, Basic Digital Literacy For Rural Clusters In Northern Nigeria/United Kingdom had commenced training of 178 vulnerable women, girls and physically challenge people across Local Government Areas in Nasarawa state.
Speaking at the opening of the training session, wife of Nasarawa state governor, Hajiya Silifat Abdullahi Sule commended the initiators of the programme.
Represented by Special Adviser on disable persons, Hajiya Hajara Dan-Yaro quoted Hajiya Silifat Sule as saying, that the training would go along away in exposing young generation into digital world.
She equally show her appreciation for seeing female gender dominant at the ongoing training where they constituted 50 percent while people living with physical challenge were 20 percent, vulnerable 30 percent of the training.
“This has given me a great joy as a mother to witness this movement where our girls child indicated interest to participate in the training.
Hajiya Silifat Sule urged the trainees to practicalised knowledge gained to equip themselves against the rainy day.
“The training will provide an enabling space for all of you to open businesses even at the comfort of your rooms to enhance your living status, just as she noted that in the next 20 years from now, persons without digital knowledge will be let behind.
The programme was put together by the United Kingdom Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in conjunction with Government of Nasarawa State.
The programme coordinator, Abdulmalik Abdulkareem explained that basic digital literacy for rural clusters was targeted to cover 10 states of the northern states with view to empower, 1,000 vulnerable women and girls, Persons with Disability (PWDs) and other vulnerable groups (such as out of school, non-computer literate community members etc.).
“The programme aims to teach them basic digital skills such as use of the computer, online safety and communication, and creating digital content, ensuring that they can fully participate within today’s digital society and the future of work.
Abdulkareem confirmed that programme aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals 1, 4 & 10 (No Poverty, and Quality Education & Reduced Inequalities), by directly investing in digital literacy for vulnerable people in Northern Nigeria.
On his part, State Director General of Bureau for Information Technology, Comrade Shehu Ibrahim who provides venue and computer systems and fueling the programme declared that such invitation will contribute greatly in reducing poverty index by closing the gap of access to digital skills.
“This needed to thrive financially and economically in the digital economy – supporting ongoing efforts by the State government in providing empowerment schemes for indigent youths and vulnerable population. He stated.
CAPITAL POST reports that the training is focusing on 10 states including Kano, Kaduna, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, Sokoto, Jigawa, Nasarawa, Niger and Plateau states.
