Majority of Nigerian governors have resolved to get vaccinated against COVID-19 pandemic on live television to boost confidence of Nigerians in the administration of vaccines.
Chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi said, it became necessary that the leaders demonstrated this to encourage Nigerians in accepting the vaccine.
He revealed this while addressing journalists in Abuja, having met with President Muhammadu Buhari earlier.
Governors’ decision, the governor of Ekiti said, followed President Muhammadu Buhari and the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo’s resolve to be vaccinated on live television.
Fayemi told journalists that Governors have experience on polio vaccination, saying there was no difference on COVID-19 case.
“Don’t forget, we have a lot of experience on this. Governors Forum managed the polio vaccines administration in the country and we have garnered a lot of experience,” said Mr Fayemi, the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum.
The Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Faisal Shuaib has earlier disclosed that 100,000 doses of Pfizer and bioNtech vaccines will arrive Nigeria by the end of the month.
The country is also expecting ‘free’ 42 million doses of vaccines in the second phase through the COVAX facility, an initiative run by the vaccine alliance, GAVI, to ensure equitable access to a COVID vaccine.
It is recalled that an 18-member National COVID-19 Committee Task team has been constituted to ensure safety of vaccines upon arrival in Nigeria.
Some world leaders have publicly taken vaccines to instill confidence in their citizens. Those, who have taken vaccines against COVID-19 are Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, US President-elect, Joe Biden among others.
