Presidency: Shekarau suggests ‘common sense’ approach, says no zoning in APC Constitution
Former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau has suggested what he described as, ‘Constitution of common sense’, in fielding a presidential candidate, saying, zoning does not exist in the All Progressives Congress (APC) constitution.
He spoke on Sunday during a media interactive session in Kano, warning that there is no rotational Presidency in APC even as 2023 general election is fast approaching.
The former Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial district, was optimistic that the APC would be guided by a principle that ensures equity and fairness, insisting that there should be, “constitution of common sense.”
According to him, the situation the party find itself is similar to how the principle of the six geo-political zone is not in the 1999 constitution of Nigeria “but today it has become recognisable.”
Shekarau maintained that the President and Vice President should not come from the same zone for purposes of equity and fairness.
“I don’t talk of zoning but balancing,” he said, adding that, “My believe is that today in Nigeria, there is no one state that does not have hundreds of qualified presidential candidate; so it should not be about killing oneself for which area produces the president. It should be ‘who is it’ and not ‘where he is from.”
Shekarau also commented on his relationship with his predecessor and successor as governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
“Kwankwaso and I are best of friends. We may have different political ideology but we all belong to Kano,” he said.
