Okura State being considered for creation, House of Reps confirms

The House of Representatives has confirmed that Okura State is being considered for creation in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended.

This was confirmed by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu during a plenary on Thursday, saying that Okura State was one of the States among to be created from the North Central region.

Kalu said, the Committee handling Constitutional Review of the 1999 Constitution got a total of 31 different proposals agitating for creation of States.
He however, read the letter on the floor of Green Chamber outlining criteria to be met satisfactorily before a State could be created.
While presiding over the plenary, Kalu released details of proposed States that are under consideration.
North Central: Okun, Okura, and Confluence (Kogi); Benue Ala and Apa (Benue); FCT State
North East: Amana (Adamawa); Katagum (Bauchi); Savannah (Borno); Muri (Taraba)
North West: New Kaduna and Gurara (Kaduna); Tiga and Ari (Kano); Kainji (Kebbi)
South East: Etiti and Orashi (the proposed 6th state in the South East); Adada (Enugu); Orlu and Aba
South South: Ogoja (Cross River); Warri (Delta); Ori and Obolo (Rivers)
South West: Torumbe (Ondo); Ibadan (Oyo); Lagoon (Lagos); Ijebu and Ogun (Ogun); Oke-Ogun/Ijesha (Oyo/Ogun/Osun)
As Nigerians continue to demand for the creation of new states, the onus lie with the parliament to prove through constitutional means to meet the yearnings of States creation.
It would be the first time that States were created in a civilian administration, if the current proposals sailed through.
