Jigawa State youths have expressed their dissatisfaction with the administration of the State governor, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar in the last seven years.

They expressed their grievances by booing the governor and his deputy, Umar Namadi when they both attended the Sallar Gani, a popular Eid-Maulud festival celebrated annually.

Change of Name

Our correspondent reports that upon sighting the governor and his entourage which comprise of his aides and political appointees, youths chorusly shouts ‘Bamayi’, ‘Bamayi’ which means ‘we don’t want you.’

The incident which happened at Gumel Local Government Council of the State was at the backdrop of governor Badaru who was expected to complete his second tenure of office by May 29, 2023.

Currently, his deputy, Alhaji Umar Namadi who is the Jigawa 2023 APC standard governorship flagbearer is being positioned to take over from the governor in 2023, if elected.

Meanwhile, Sallar Gani is a popular celebration during the annual Eid-El-Maulud (Celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) in Gumel, where the people display an age-old blend of multiethnic cultures through Dubar and other cultural activities.

Those spotted at the festival before running into the stormy waters were the APC governorship running mate in the 2023 general election, Eng. Aminu Usman Gumel, APC State Party Chairman, Alhaji Aminu Sani Gumel and many high ranking party officials.

Also, the disenchanted governor and some of his officials could be seen in a viral video where youths were chanting
‘Bamayi’.

In the video the governor and his deputy became flustered at the yelling crowd through the sunroof of a jeep.

Though the youths did not speak up on their grievances it was however gathered, that they were not happy with the way and manner the governor abandoned the State while the devastating flood ravaged the state and added to the frustration of citizens.

It was gathered that the Governor travelled out of the country when his State was being submerged by floods, hence many communities were inundated by the devastation from the flood that claimed over 100 lives, destroyed farmlands and other valuable properties.

Even after the governor returned, it was gathered that he never visited any of the internally displayed persons camps to sympathize with the victims or to condole the families that lost their loved ones.

An eye witness who was in the governor’s convoy but would not want his name in prints told our reporter that “Yes the governor was booed by a few youth group not to the extent it is being exaggerated

According to him everything started well, we arrived the town and the venue of the festival peacefully and we were recieved warmly. After the event when we were leaving the governor and APC candidate were in the same opened roof vehicle waving at the crowd when the youths started charting “Bamayi! Banayi!”.

The governor and the gubernatorial candidate were booed right from the palace until they left Gumel town. After the embarrassment they did not even wait to pray the Maghrib prayers.
When contacted the special adviser to the governor on Media and Publicity, Alhaji Habibu Nuhu Kila said “it was not true”.

Alhaji Kila asked rhetorically, what of the thousands in the palace that were praising the governorship candidate who chanted Sai Danmodu?
